Why We Built Arko

India’s healthcare infrastructure is undergoing a massive transformation. With over 70,000 hospitals across the country and the government’s ambitious Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) reshaping how healthcare data flows, hospitals need modern tools designed for this new reality.

Yet most hospital management software available in India today was designed years ago. Many systems are built on outdated architectures, require extensive on-premise infrastructure, and treat digital health compliance as an afterthought. Smaller hospitals and multi-doctor clinics often find themselves choosing between expensive enterprise solutions that are overkill for their needs, or basic systems that cannot keep pace with regulatory and operational requirements.

That is why we built Arko.

What Arko Is

Arko is a hospital management platform built specifically for Indian hospitals. It is AI-native from day one, designed with modern web technologies, and built with ABDM compliance at its core rather than bolted on as a module.

Our goal is simple: give small Indian hospitals the same quality of technology that large corporate hospital chains enjoy.

Built for Indian Healthcare

Every design decision in Arko starts with the Indian hospital context. This means:

• Built on ABDM’s record standards: health records in Arko are structured to FHIR R4, the format ABDM is built on. ABHA ID creation, Health Locker and Consent Manager integrations are not available today — they follow as those standards settle, and we make no certification claim.

• Multi-language support: India’s linguistic diversity means hospital staff and patients operate in multiple languages. The system runs in English today; regional language interfaces are in build now and roll out with our next hospitals.

• Indian billing workflows: OPD billing is live today — itemised invoices, cash, card and UPI recorded at the desk, and a Day Close view showing expected against collected money by payment mode. Consultation by a clinical establishment is a GST-exempt healthcare service, so no tax is added to an OPD bill. Government scheme billing and TPA pre-authorisation are not available today.

• Cloud-first deployment: Arko runs as a cloud-first platform, so there is no on-premise server to buy, house or maintain.

AI at the Core

When we say Arko is built with AI at its core, we mean that artificial intelligence is woven into the platform’s workflows rather than offered as a separate premium feature. The consultation screen is built around an AI assistant working alongside the doctor. That assistance is in build now and rolls out with our next hospitals; what follows is where it is being applied:

• Clinical documentation assistance: AI-assisted note-taking is designed to help doctors spend less time on paperwork and more time with patients.

• Billing intelligence: Pattern recognition is designed to flag potential unbilled services and coding errors before they become revenue leakage.

• Operational insights: Dashboards that go beyond simple reporting to surface actionable recommendations for improving efficiency.

• Smart scheduling: Queue and appointment management that is designed to learn from patterns and help reduce patient wait times.

We are careful about where and how we apply AI. Every AI feature in Arko is designed to assist human decision-making, not replace it. Clinical decisions always remain with the healthcare professional.

Who Arko Is For

Arko is designed primarily for hospitals in the 5 to 30 bed range and for multi-doctor OPD clinics — a segment that represents a significant portion of India’s healthcare infrastructure. These hospitals typically:

• Have established clinical workflows but struggle with manual administrative processes
• Want to adopt ABDM but lack the technical resources to manage complex integrations
• Need affordable technology that can grow with them
• Require systems that their staff can learn quickly without extensive training programmes

Smaller nursing homes looking to professionalise their operations are equally in scope.

Our Approach to Compliance and Privacy

Healthcare data is among the most sensitive information that exists. Arko takes data protection seriously:

• DPDP Act readiness: Arko is designed to align with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act requirements for handling patient data.

• ABDM-ready records: health records are structured to FHIR R4 (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources), the standard ABDM is built on. We make no certification claim.

• Data residency: All data is designed to be stored within India, in compliance with applicable regulations.

• Role-based access: Granular permission controls ensure staff only access the data they need for their roles.

We believe privacy and compliance should be built into the platform architecture, not added as compliance checkboxes.
